VIdeoLAN is a non-profit organisation and a software project aimed at creating better open source multimedia software.
The project started in a French University and has been driven through years with many students. The project is international and contributors are working on it during their free time.
Code of software are released under the GPL.
VLC is an open-source and cross-platform multimedia framework. VLC is also player, a streamer and a converter for many multimedia formats.
VLC is widely used and works on many platforms.

x264 is a free software library for encoding H264/AVC video streams.
Used by many multimedia projects, it is cross platform and focused on quality and speed of encoding.
